Meet your tutor

Hi, I'm Kevin McNicholas and I have taught thousands of people, from ages 8 to 80, how to sing and play their favourite songs on guitar.

I have been a working musician for nearly 50 years, and a guitar teacher for most of that time.

I have worked all over the music industry, from retailing records and instruments, directing and producing stage musicals and pantomimes, presenting and producing radio programmes, to gigging solo and with various bands, running a recording studio and co-ordinating a training project for unemployed musicians.

But my first love has always been teaching guitar. I love nothing better than channeling all my experience, passion and skill into making Guitar Made Easy the best it can be – the fast fun and easy way to learn to play guitar.

How do I enrol for lessons?

Phone Kevin now* at 086 8595366 and arrange a time and day for your first lesson. Choose any day from Monday to Friday, and any time between 10am and 8pm.
*( I don't take calls while I'm teaching, but if you leave a message, I'll get back to you quickly.)

How long does it take to learn guitar?

That's a nice easy question – it's up there with "how long is a piece of string"! Your progress depends entirely on how much time and effort you devote to practice. Like most things in life, the more you put in, the more you get out. But remember, the hardest song in the world to play on your guitar is the very first one. Your second song will be slightly less hard, and before you know it you will be sailing through your favourite songs like a real musician.

Do I need to have prior musical knowledge?

No, absolutely not. Lessons start from the very basics, and build week by week. You don't need to learn to read music in order to play guitar. You don't need to be able to sing, though I guarantee you will be singing along very early on. You do need to be able to count to four, and say the alphabet as far as G, but everything else you need to know will be covered during your lessons.

What is the youngest age that you teach?

Eight years of age is generally the youngest a child can manage the guitar. But children vary a lot, both in physical size and in their concentration abilities. A child who can stick with and maintain a daily practice routine will progress quickly on guitar, but a child – or adult – who doesn't practice every day will make no progress.

Am I too old at 55?

No. If you love music, are interested in playing, and have half an hour a day to devote to practice, then you can learn to play the guitar at any age. Retired people often have an advantage over others in that they may have more free time on their hands.

What is the best type of guitar for a beginner?

A steel string acoustic guitar is suitable for most beginners, and for most styles of music. Quality makes include Tanglewood, Fender, Peavey, Yamaha, Epiphone, Aria etc. Your local music store will be able to advise you on buying your first guitar, and will also supply you with capos, straps, music stands and other accessories you may need.
